Your Task

STEP TWO: Now that you have chosen a book cover, you must figure out how you can convince Mr. Filch to choose your image for the cover. You will need to persuade him that your choice is best, using a claim statement, three main points, and evidence. USE THE FOLLOWING TO HELP YOU FILL IN THE PERSUASIVE MAP SIDE OF THE HANDOUT.

ELEMENTS REQUIRED FOR ESSAY:

CLAIM/GOAL STATEMENT: This will be a statement of your opinion of the BEST image for the anthology's cover. Use this example as a model: "In choosing the most appropriate cover image for the Penguin Publication's anthology devoted to dystopian texts, the picture of the girl chasing her own face as it flies away is the best representation of the concepts and themes of a dystopia because...."

THREE MAIN POINTS: Give three main reasons why you believe your image to be the best. These will be the DYSTOPIAN CHARACTERISTICS that you see in your chosen image that you believe make the image the best choice. You will need to explain how the characteristics are shown in the details in the image--things like color, placement, props/figures--the things you use to make meaning out of the image. For instance, you might consider the following as image details (these are examples only!):

1. color symbolism relates to violence and oppression common in dystopias

2. inclusion of a single figure (person) represents the isolation people in dystopias feel

3. the placement of the hand, as if slowly rising up against a force, represents the desire to rebel against the control of the dystopia

EXAMPLES OF DYSTOPIAN CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Violence
  • Control
  • Lack of Individuality
  • Oppression
  • Isolation
  • Chaos

These main points will become the topic sentences for your body paragraphs of your essay.

EVIDENCE: You will need to further explain your main points. If I was using the example points from above, I would need to describe how the colors used represent violence and oppression in one paragraph. Then, I need to find and EXAMPLE from one of the texts we read to show how violence is often present in dystopias. In the next paragraph, I would discuss how isolation is present in a dystopia (using image details and texts as evidence), and in the next paragraph, I would discuss how dystopias feature rebellion against control (using image and texts as evidence).

Each point needs EVIDENCE to support how that detail from the image relates to a dystopia. So, relate these aspects of the image back the concept of dystopias using TEXTUAL EVIDENCE from any of the texts we studied in our unit. For each of your main points (so, for each body paragraph), you need at least TWO pieces of evidence to support the points. One piece of evidence for each point should be a detail from the image itself to support that it portrays a dystopian characteristic and the other piece of evidence must come from ANY of the texts we have read during our unit. You must use at least ONE direct quote in your paper to serve as evidence.

NOTE: For a direct quote, you must write the quote out, in its entirety, and include the page number of the quote on the handout.

COUNTER ARGUMENT: In order to strengthen your case to Mr. Filch, you need to address the fact that some other people who enter his contest may select a different image. But, you also need to convince him that their choices are wrong by summarizing the case that can be made against the image you chose and stating why those claims would be false.

The handout, with BOTH sides completed will be due by the end of class on Thursday, 9/4. Refer to your notes (claim statements, notes on the texts we have read, handouts, etc) as needed.**
